Noah Lyles was favored. He had won the event at the 2019, 2022, and 2023 World Championships and had won the Olympic 100 metres only four days before this final. His biggest challengers were thought to be his teammates, Kenny Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton, as a USA sweep seemed a possibility.
All three Americans made the final, along with Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, expected to be their strongest challenger. Defending gold medalist Andre De Grasse finished third in the first semi-final but did not advance to the final. The semi-finals were won by Bednarek (1), Tebogo (2, over Lyles), and Knighton (3).
The semi-final winners were supposed to get lanes 6-7-8 for the final but, when the initial lane assignments came out, Bednarek was in lane 4, with Alexander Ogando (DOM) in lane 8. Bednarek protested and the lanes were switched.
Bednarek and Tebogo took the early lead, with Bednarek slightly ahead at 100 metres, while Lyles was in third place. Tebogo had the fastest finish, taking the gold medal in an African record time of 19.46, making him the #5 performer of all-time. His gold medal was the first ever for Botswana in any sport.
Bednarek held on for silver, holding off Lyles, who took bronze, just ahead of Knighton in fourth. At the finish, Lyles lay down on the track and later revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19 only two days before the final but elected to run. There were no restrictions at Paris 2024 on athletes participating after a COVID diagnosis.
