There was no clear favorite in the women’s 100 metres hurdles. Nigerian Tobi Amusan had set the world record of 12.12 in winning the 2022 World Championship. Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn was the defending gold medalist and had been world ranked #1 in 2021 and 2023. The Americans had been very deep in this event in the last few years but none of their runners had stood out in 2024, and their best known hurdlers, Keni Harrison and Nia Ali, had not made the 2024 US Olympic team.

The early rounds had no surprises but then, in the first semi-final, Amusan finished in a tie for third (with Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska) and neither would advance to the final on time. Grace Stark (USA) won the first semi and Camacho-Quinn took the third, just ahead of American Masai Russell, as France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela finished fourth, but advanced on time.

Dutchwoman Nadine Visser had the fastest start in the final but Camacho-Quinn took the lead at the fifth hurdle. At hurdle eight, Samba-Mayela edged to the front, followed by Camacho-Quinn and Russell. Russell had the best lean at the tape in a very close finish, taking gold over Samba-Mayela, with Camacho-Quinn getting the bronze medal. Behind them, Visser edged out Stark for fourth by only 3/1000ths of a second.

Russell’s victory was a big upset. She had not won any major races in 2024 until the US Olympic Trials in June. Both she and Camacho-Quinn had run in college at the University of Kentucky. Samba-Mayela won the only French medal in athletics on home soil.
