The clear favorite was American Valarie Allman. She was the defending gold medalist and won the Diamond League Final in 2022 and 2023. Her biggest challengers were considered to be China’s Feng Bin, the 2023 World Champion, and Croatian Sandra Perković-Elkašević, the dominant thrower of most of the 2010s, the 2012 and 2016 gold medalist, and a seven-time European Champion.
Missing was Cuba’s Yaimé Pérez, the 2019 World Champion and bronze medalist at this event in Tokyo 2020. Pérez was the 2024 world leader but she defected to the United States after competing at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene and was not eligible to compete at Paris. At a meet in Oklahoma, in April 2024, Pérez had thrown 73.09 metres, making her the #10 performer all-time, and the first mark in the 21st century in the top 20 performance all-time list.
Feng took the lead in round one of the final with 66.33 metres. In round two, Allman went ahead with 68.74 metres, a mark which would be good enough for the gold medal, but she would better that in both round four (69.50) and round six (69.21), easily defending her gold medal. Behind her, Feng and Perković-Elkašević both threw 67.51 metres in round three, which would be their best marks. Feng recorded 67.25 in round five to bring her the silver medal, as Perković-Elkašević’s second best mark was only 64.25 metres from the first round.
Allman’s consecutive gold medals were only the third time this had occurred in the women’s discus throw, after Perković-Elkašević in 2012-2016 and Evelin Schlaak-Jahl (GDR) in 1976-1980. Soviet thrower Nina Romashkova-Ponomaryova also won two gold medals in the event, in 1952 and 1960. She won bronze in 1956, and her three medals in the event, also done by Lia Manoliu (ROU) in 1960-1968, were equalled by Perković-Elkašević with her bronze medal in Paris.
A special note for French Mélina Robert-Michon for her seventh selection for the Olympic Games in a row 2000-2024, four times a finalist and winner of a silver medal in Rio. She was, with the swimmer Florent Manaudou, flag bearer of the French team during the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
