Olympic Record (Ranking Round, 216 arrows) | 1,994 WR / Kim Su-Nyeong • Kim Nam-Sun • Yun Mi-Jin KOR / 16 September 2000 |
Korea had won every Olympic gold medal in this event, triumphing in 1988-2000. They had also won the 2003 World Championships, reversing some surprising results when Italy won the 1999 Worlds and China won in 2001. As they had in 1992 and 1996 the Korean women set a world record in the ranking round, confirming their favorite status. Korea then had two easy victories before they faced the 2001 World Champion Chinese in the final round. With three arrows left the match was in the balance and Korea’s shooter Park Seong-Hyeon needed 27 points for the gold medal. After a 9 and an 8 on the first two shots, she needed a 10 for the victory and came through, to extend the Korean winning streak in this event to five. The bronze medal was won by Chinese Taipei, as three different Asian nations stood on the podium.
