Korea’s Hwang Hye-Yeong was the best female doubles player in the world. She had won the All-England title in 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1991, the first three titles with Chung Myung-Hee, who retired after the 1990 season. The 1991 championship was won with Jeong So-Yeong and they were the top-seeded pair in Barcelona. The second-seeded team was China’s Guan Weizhen and Nong Qunhua, the 1991 World Champions. Both teams won their first three matches easily. The first game of the final was an 18-16 marathon, with Hwang/Chung prevailing. But Guan/Nong came back to win the second game. The decider was very close, with Korea having five match points before winning, 15-13. The top four seeded teams all reached the semi-finals.
