The format was similar to 1964-72, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. However, nations were now limited to only two gymnasts in the finals. Soviet Lyudmila Turishcheva led the qualifying with 19.85, but when her teammate, Nelli Kim, scored a perfect 10 in the final round, Kim had the gold medal with Turishcheva taking silver, followed by Nadia Comăneci in third place. In 1980 at Moskva, Kim and Comăneci would tie and share the gold medal.
Top six in individual all-around, maximum of two per nation, advanced to the individual apparatus finals.
