Team All-Around, Women

Date17 – 19 September 2000
StatusOlympic
LocationSydney SuperDome, Olympic Park, Sydney, New South Wales
Participants72 from 12 countries

The event was changed slightly. In 1996 teams consisted of seven gymnasts, with six competing on each apparatus, and only the top five scores counting for each routine. In 2000, the format reverted to six gymnasts per team, with five allowed to compete with the top four scores counting on each apparatus. In addition, there was now a qualifying round which advanced six teams to the finals. The qualifying score were then discarded and only the final round scores counted towards the final placements.

Romania had been a power in team all-around since the mid-1970s, winning the silver medal behind the Soviet Union in 1976, 1980, 1988, and 1992, but they had only won the gold medal in 1984, when the Soviets boycotted. However, Romania had won the 1997 and 1999 World Championships, with Russia second both times, and in Sydney, the Romanians finally defeated the Russians/Soviets at the Olympics, winning the gold medal in a desparately close contest. Russia had led in the qualifying round, but Romania surpassed them in the finals for the gold.

China appeared to win the bronze medal, with the United States fourth. However, when one of the Chinese gymnasts, Dong Fangxiao, entered for the 2008 Olympics, her date of birth was listed as 25 January 1986 on the entry form, which would have made her 14-years-old in 2000, and two years too young to compete. After an investigation in 2010 by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, she was declared ineligible in 2000, and her results were voided, which disqualified the Chinese team, and the Americans were moved up and later received bronze medals.
