The format was the same as it had been from 1984-2000, with eight gymnasts advancing from the team all-around, but no more than two per nation. Romanian Cătălina Ponor had won the 2004 European Championship on beam and was the silver medalist at the 2003 World Championships. Favored, she came through for the gold medal as expected, narrowly edging American Carly Patterson, the winner of the all-around gold medal. Bronze went to Ponor’s teammate Alexandra Eremia.
Top eight on each apparatus (maximum two per nation) in the individual all-around qualifying advanced to the apparatus finals.
