In the women’s singles Natalie Geisenberger was the reigning Olympic Champion from Sochi in 2014, and was also World Champion at Sigulda in 2015 and Königsee in 2016. At the 2017 Worlds in Igls Tatjana Hüfner won her fifth gold, and Geisenberger was only sixth after a weak first run, with Erin Hamlin (USA) and Kim McRae (CAN) in second and third. Three weeks before the Olympics Tatyana Ivanova (RUS) won the European title in Sigulda, beating Geisenberger and Sandra Robatscher (ITA).
In PyeongChang Geisenberger was in the lead after the first run and was never threatened. Dajana Eitberger (GER) was the third-ranked German competitor but surprised many by winning the silver medal. Alex Gough (CAN) had a great fourth run, and passed Hüfner for the bronze medal. Gough won Canada’s first ever medal in luge.
