The only top women competing in Guadalajara were the American trio of Jane “Peaches” Bartkowicz, Julie Heldman, and Valerie Ziegenfuss, and the West German duo of Helga Niessen and Edda Buding. Niessen won the competition by defeating Peaches in straight sets in the final. Niessen’s best career Grand Slam result was losing in the final of the 1970 French Open to Margaret Court.
