Eight fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The 1985 and 1987 World Champion was American Lynnette Love, and she came through to win the title in Seoul, defeating Korean Jang Yoon-Jung, a bronze medalist at the 1987 Worlds, in the final. Love later won the 1991 Worlds, and finished third in this event at the 1992 Olympic taekwondo demonstration.
