Six fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. American Lynnette Love was the defending champion and had won the 1991 World Championships. She had a bye in round one and then met Spain’s Coral Bistuer in the semi-finals. Bistuer had been 1987 World Champion as a welterweight but had since moved up in class. She and Love fought to a 0-0 tie, but Bistuer was given the victory by officials’ decision. She then defeated New Zealand’s Susanne Graham in the final.
