This was the second time wheelchair racing was held as a demonstration event on the athletics program at the Olympics. The men raced 1,500 metres on the track with eight competitors. The event was won by France’s Mustapha Badid, who narrowly defeated the 1984 champion, Belgian Paul Van Winkel. Between 1984 and 1996 Badid won six gold medals and eight medals at the Stoke Mandeville and Paralympic Games.
