The thin air of Ciudad de México allowed the triple jumpers to produce a remarkable series of jumps, re-arranging the world record and world lists. It started in qualifying when Italy’s Giuseppe Gentile broke the world record with 17.10 (5-1¼). In round one of the final, he bettered that with 17.22 (56-6). But he could not improve that, although it would eventually bring him the bronze medal. The favorite, Viktor Saneyev (URS), jumped 17.23 (56-6½) in round three to get a narrow lead. Then in round five, Brazil’s Nelson Prudêncio set another world record with 17.27 (56-8). He backed that up with 17.15 (56-3¼) in round six, only to see Saneyev snatch the gold medal and world record with a final round effort of 17.39 (57-0¾). During the qualifying and final, the pre-Olympic world record had been beaten nine times and equaled twice. Two-time defending champion Józef Szmidt made the final, finshing seventh.
