Americans Tianna Bartoletta and Britney Reese came in as favorites to win medals. Reese was the defending gold medalist while Bartoletta was well known for both sprinting and jumping, having won a gold medal at London in the 4x100 relay. She has also been 2006 World Indoor Champion in the long jump.
The lead in round one of the final was taken by Serbian Ivana Španović, who soared 6.95. Bartoletta equaled that in round three, but moved into the lead based on her second round mark of 6.94. In round five Reese moved into the lead with 7.09, but Bartoletta bettered that with 7.17. Španović responded with 7.08, but it was only good enough to remain in third place. In the final round, Reese improved again, but her 7.15 did not catch Bartoletta. Španović again came through with a good mark, jumping 7.05, but it did not change the medal standings, as Bartoletta won gold, Reese silver, and Španović bronze.
