Aleksandr Gomelsky was a pioneering basketball coach in the Soviet Union, helping make them an international power. Coaching Rīgas ASK, he led them to three consecutive European Cup of Champions titles, in 1958-60, and eventually won 13 Soviet national titles. He coached the Soviet team at four Olympics, in 1960, 1964, 1980, and 1988, winning a gold medal in 1988. At EuroBasket, Gomelsky helped the USSR win six titles – 1963, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1979, and 1981. He also led the team to World Championships in 1967 and 1982. Gomelsky was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.
