Biography

After finishing second to Mike Booth in the 1968 British Gymnastics Championships, Stan Wild went on to win the title five times between 1969-74. He was also a member of the Dick Gradley-coached Leeds Athletic Institute team that won the Adams Shield for the national team championship in 1971-72 and 1977. Wild competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, and at four world and three European Championships.

Wild, who represented England/GB on 26 occasions, was born in South Yorkshire but moved to York in 1969 to become a physical education teacher. He later founded the York Gymnastics Club in 1974. Wild married fellow Leeds Athletic Institute gymnast Elizabeth Broadhead shortly before moving to York.

In 2008, a complaint was made to the police about sexually inappropriate behaviour by Wild. Despite never being charged with any criminal activity, Wild was expelled as a coach by British Gymnastics for safeguarding reasons in December 2020, 12 years after the initial complaint. British Gymnastics later announced, in 2023, that Wild was banned from gymnastics or life.
