The format was similar to 1964 and 1968, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. The Japanese had swept the medals on floor at the 1970 World Championships, but Soviet Nikolay Andrianov broke that up in München, winning the gold medal, which he would defend in 1976 at Montréal. Andrianov was followed by Akinori Nakayama, who won silver, and his Japanese teammate, Shigeru Kasamatsu. Nakayama had also won the silver medal in this in 1968 at Mexico City.
