The format was similar to 1964 and 1968, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. All the finalists were from Japan and the Soviet Union, but Japan swept the medals, led by individual all-around champion Sawao Kato, who led the team all-around qualifying and had the best score in the final round. Kato would win the gold medal again in 1976, the first gymnast to defend his gold medal on the parallel bars. Silver and bronze went to Shigeru Kasamatsu and Eizo Kenmotsu.
