Jürgen Brümmer was a nine-time German gymnastics champion and took part in the 1987 and 1989 World Gymnastics Championships. After the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he finished a disappointing 12th with the team and 64th individually, he ran a sports physiotherapy practice, taking care of the German national junior gymnastics team as well as various handball and football teams.
Brümmer committed suicide by jumping from a bridge, shortly after he had probably killed his severely disabled son, Simon. Simon had been severely injured two years earlier, when he was hit by a car. He sustained a serious traumatic brain injury, which left him disabled, wheelchair-dependent, and unable to speak. Brümmer was never able to overcome the trauma to his son and took his own life.
