As in 1984 eight gymnasts qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, with no more than two gymnasts per team allowed to advance to the finals. The total score consisted of 50% of the team qualifying scores, and the final round score from an optional routine on the apparatus. Yury Korolyov had won the World Championships on rings in both 1985 and 1987 but he did not make the 1988 Soviet team for Seoul. Soviet Dmitry Bilozerchev led the team qualifying but East German Holger Behrendt had the highest score in the final round as the two tied for first and shared the gold medal. Behrendt’s teammates Sven Tippelt won the bronze medal, as he had done on the parallel bars.
