The Soviet Union won this gold medal for only the second time since 1956, after 1980, winning quite easily over the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Japan, which had been the men’s team power, winning gold from 1960-76, placed third and won the bronze medal, just edging out China. The United States had won the gold at the boycotted 1984 Olympics but placed 11th of 12 teams in Seoul.
