As in 1984 eight gymnasts qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, with no more than two gymnasts per team allowed to advance to the finals. The total score consisted of 50% of the team qualifying scores, and the final round score from an optional routine on the apparatus. Vladimir Artyomov had won the title on parallel bars at the 1987 World Championships and in Seoul he narrowly defeated his teammate, Valery Lyukin. They had been 1-2 after team qualifying and both scored 9.95 in the final round to maintain their places. East German Sven Tippelt won the bronze medal, as he also did on the rings.
