Aleksandr Dityatin set an Olympic record in the gymnastics competition at Moscow by 1980, by winning a medal in all eight gymnastics events. The record is also the most medals won by any athlete at a single Olympics, since equaled by Michael Phelps in swimming in 2004. His three gold medals came in the team and individual all-around, and on the rings, to which he added four silvers and a bronze medal.
His finest performance was in the horse vault when he received the first perfect score (10) awarded to a male gymnast at the Olympics. He was equally dominant at the World Championships, winning 12 medals (seven gold, two silver, three bronze). His best year was 1979 when he was all-around champion, and won gold medals on the rings and the horse vault. Dityatin was also all-around World Cup champion in 1978 and 1979.
