The format was the same as in 1976, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, but only two gymnasts from each nation could advance to the finals. The final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. Aleksandr Dityatin (URS) had won the silver medal in 1976 at Montréal, was the 1979 World Champion, and won this gold medal easily. He had the highest score in both team qualifying and the final round, taking the gold by 0.15 points over his teammate Aleksandr Tkachyov. Bronze went to Czechoslovak Jiří Tabák who won his nation’s only gymnastics medal in Moskva, and their first in men’s Olympic gymnastics since 1948.
Top six in individual all-around, maximum of two per nation, advanced to the individual apparatus finals.
