The format was similar to 1964-72, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. However, nations were now limited to only two gymnasts in the finals. Hungarian Zoltán Magyar won the gold medal with the highest score in qualifying and the final round. Magyar came in as the favorite, having won the 1973 and 1975 European Championships and the 1974 World Championships. He would defend his gold medal on pommelled horse in 1980, and win the Worlds in 1978-79, and another European Championship in 1977. Magyar is considered, along with Yugoslavian Miroslav Cerar, 1964-68 Olympic gold medalist, as the greatest ever pommelled horse performer. Silver in 1976 went to Japan’s Eizo Kenmotsu while the bronze was shared between Soviet Nikolay Andrianov and East German Michael Nikolay.
Top six in individual all-around, maximum of two per nation, advanced to the individual apparatus finals.
