Josef Staudinger failed to reach the finals of both the springboard and platform events at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. However, he then went on to win the platform title at the 1931 Paris European Championships. Staudinger returned to the Olympics at Los Angeles in 1932 and placed ninth in the springboard and an unfortunate fourth in the platform event.
Staudinger married twice and both of his wives were team-mates. The first was Magdalena Epply-Staudinger, and the second was Alma Staudinger. Staudinger and Epply were often been photographed by Austrian (sport) journalists as they were a popular media attraction.
