Troy Dumais was the best-known American diver of the early 21st century, competing at four Olympic Games from 2000 to 2012, highlighted by a bronze medal in the synchronized springboard event at the 2012 London Olympics. That bronze medal, along with David Boudia and Nicholas McCrory’s bronze in synchronized platform at London, were the first USA Olympic diving medals since 2000, and the first by men since 1996 at Atlanta.
Dumais grew up in a family of divers and began diving from a young age in Southern California. He initially played several sports but focused on diving and attended the University of Texas. He was NCAA Champion on the 3-metre springboard in 1999, and in 2000 and 2001 won both the 1-metre and 3-metre collegiate titles on springboard.
Dumais won five medals at the World Championships, with silver medals in the 1998, 2005, and 2009 3-metre springboard and the 2009 synchro springboard. He added a bronze medal in the 2005 synchronized springboard. At the Pan American Games, Dumais won six medals, with gold in the 2007 synchro springboard. He also won a silver in 2011 synchro springboard and added four bronze medals at Pan Ams.
Dumais was USA Diving’s Athlete of the Year in 1997 and 2006, also winning the Sullivan Award in 2006. He was twice a gold medalist at the World Junior Championships, winning both the 1-metre and 3-metre springboard title in 1999.
