Bogdan Musiol was the winner of an Olympic gold medal with the GDR four-man bobsled team in 1980, when he also won a bronze medal in the two-man. He went on to win silver medals in 1984 and 1988, at both the two- and four-man, and, in 1992, won a silver medal in the two-man. In 1989, Musiol won the world two-man title as the brakeman for Wolfgang Hoppe, with whom he won an Olympic silver in 1988.
At the World Championships Musiol earned three more golds, and two silver and two bronze medals between 1978 and 1991. At the European Championships he added two more golds, and four silver and bronze medals. Musiol was born in Poland and emigrated with his family to East Germany during the 1960s. In the former GDR he started his sports career as a shot putter but turned to bobsleigh very soon. In 1992, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
During his sports career Musiol was employed by the National People’s Army (Nationale Volksarmee). In 2000, he became groundsman of the German Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton Federation. His son Julian was a nationally successful ski jumper.
