Built specifically for the Olympics, 1972 diving took place at the Schwimmhale in the Olympiapark in Munich. The indoor arena hosted water polo, swimming, diving, and the swimming section of the modern pentathlon. There were four diving events – 3-metre springboard and 10-metre platform for men and women, which remained the standard Olympic diving program through 1996. The big news was that American divers, who had completely dominated this sport since 1920, won only one gold medal, that going to Micki King in women’s springboard, while Klaus Dibiasi won the second of his three consecutive gold medals in men’s platform.
