The event was similar to 1972, with seven events on the program. Free rifle was dropped from the Olympic Program and has not returned thru 2008. Always shot at distances of 300 metres (and greater in early years), the event had been on the Olympic Program since 1896. The event was the victim of a move to shorten the distances used in Olympic shooting, so that shorter and smaller ranges could be constructed. It continues to be shot at the World Championships. Women again competed alongside men in mixed events, with nine women competing in 1976.
