The wrestling competition was held on mats laid out in the infield of the White City Stadium. This was the first time that both Gréco-Roman and freestyle-type competitions were held at the same Olympics. It would not occur again until 1920, at which time it became standard for future Olympic Games. In 1908, only Great Britain and Sweden entered wrestlers in both styles.
Favorites could really only be chosen in Gréco-Roman as, up until 1908, world and European championships had only been conducted in that class. The matches were the best of one fall, except for the finals and bronze-medal matches, which were the best two of three falls. Time limit was 15 minutes in catch-as-catch-can and 20 minutes in Gréco-Roman.
