The Spanish team of Fernando Léon and José Luis Ballester never won a race in Savannah, and had a premature start disqualification in race nine, but they were consistent and built up such a big lead that they did not have to start the final race to win the gold medal. Bronze medal skipper Lars Grael had also won a bronze in this class in 1988. His brother, Torben Grael, won the Star gold medal in Savannah, one of five Olympic medals he would win in sailing, an Olympic best, although equalled by Britain’s Ben Ainslie and Brazil’s Robert Scheidt.
