Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

The defending gold medalist was Bulgaria’s Petar Kirov. As the 1970-71 World Champion and the 1970 European Champion, he came to München as a heavy favorite. He would win the gold medal but it was close as he was extended in the final round by Japan’s Koichiro Hirayama. Kirov continued to win, taking the 1974 Worlds and the 1976 Europeans, but he was eliminated early in his attempt to three-peat at Montréal. Hirayama would do better in 1976, winning a bronze medal, after winning the 1974 Asian Games title. Bronze in München went to Italy’s Giuseppe Bognanni, whose only other international podium was a bronze as a bantamweight at the 1969 Europeans.
