The class was considered open, as the medal podiums at recent internationals had seen multiple different wrestlers. Two wrestlers were dominant in Atlanta, however, with each allowing only a single point on their way to the final – France’s Ghani Yalouz and Poland’s Ryszard Wolny. They had met at the 1995 European final, with Yalouz winning that title, but in Atlanta Wolny won easily, 7-0, to take gold. This was his third Olympics and he would eventually compete in five editions, but this was his only medal. Yalouz was competing in his second of three Olympics, also winning his only medal in Atlanta. The bronze medal went to Russia’s Aleksandr Tretyakov, who would become the top wrestler in this class in the next few years, winning the 1998 World and 1997-98 European titles.
