Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel had been the cycling star of the 2000 Olympics, winning three gold medals in the road time trial, road race, and individual pursuit, and adding a silver in the points race. In Athina she had crashed in the road race, while trying to defend that title, and did not finish. But in the time trial she built up a 23-second lead by the 12 km. checkpoint and maintained that to the line, defeating early starting American Dede Demet-Barry by 24 seconds. The 2004 World Champion, Karin Thürig (SUI), placed third.
