The Grand Prix test was 7 minutes long, while the Grand Prix Special was 7½ minutes. The top 16 riders in the qualifying round advanced to the final round, but only three riders from any nation could advance. This worked against Germany’s Monica Theodorescu, who placed fourth in qualifying, but trailed her three teammates and was not advanced. Defending champion Nicole Uphoff had also won the 1990 World Championship and in Barcelona, became the second dressage rider to defend her gold medal, after Sweden’s Henri Saint Cyr in 1952-56, but Saint Cyr won his gold medals on two different horses, as Rembrandt, under Uphoff, became the first horse to defend a gold medal in this event. Isabell Werth won the silver medal but would improve and win gold at Atlanta in 1996. Klaus Balkenhol won bronze while the top non-German was fourth-placed Dutchwoman Anky van Grunsven, who would win a silver medal in this event in 1996, and then gold medals in 2000, 2004, and 2008.
