American Taekwondo fighter Anastasija Zolotic, whose parents were immigrants from Bosnia-Herzegovina, earned the gold medal for her new home country against Tatyana Minina from the Russian Olympic Committee by 25-17. Minina was the reigning three-time European champion. Zolotic made history by becoming the first American woman to win Olympic Taekwondo gold.

Heavy favorite and number one seed, the reigning world champion and two-time Olympic champion Jade Jones from Great Britain, lost her first-round bout against refugee Kimia Alizadeh and was eliminated. The bronze medals went to Lo Chia-Ling from Chinese Taipei and Hatice Kübra İlgün from Türkiye.
