The favorite and the dominant player early in the year on the LPGA Tour had been Nelly Korda, who won five consecutive events on that tour, the fifth of which was the Chevron Championship, her second major title. She had been world ranked #1 mostly since 2021 and was the defending gold medalist. Korda came from an athletic family. Her sister, Jessica Korda, also plays on the LPGA Tour, while her brother Sebastian Korda plays tennis on the ATP Tour. Their father, Petr Korda, was once the world ranked #2 tennis player in the world, and their mother, Regina Rajchrtová, played professional tennis, reaching a best ranking of #26 in the world.

Lydia Ko of New Zealand had won Olympic silver in 2016 and bronze in 2020. She had been world ranked #1 in 2015, when she was only 17-years-old, and seemed destined to be the next great thing. While she had several good years, her career had an up-and-down quality to it and she had not won in 2023, although early in 2024 she took the LPGA Tournament of Champions.

France’s Céline Boutier, a product of the dominant Duke University women’s golf program, took a three-shot lead on day one with 65, as only South Africa’s Ashleigh Simon-Buhai also broke 70. Round two saw the lead taken by little-known Morgane Metraux of Switzerland at 6-under, followed by China’s Ronni Yin, but Ko was lurking in third place, three shots back. Korda was back in 12th place, six shots behind Metraux.

Ko and Metraux took the lead after round three at nine-under, with American Rose Zhang and Japan’s Miyu Yamashita in third. Korda moved up to seventh place but had a lot of work to do. Metraux could not maintain her level, shooting 79 in the final round and dropping to a tie for 18th. Ko went on to a relatively easy two-shot victory, despite shooting only a 71 in the final round, as nobody really moved up to challenge her. For Ko, this gave her a complete set of medals in Olympic women’s golf. Germany’s Esther Henseleit shot 66 in the final round to take the silver medal while China’s Janet Lin won the bronze.
