The maximum weight limit in this division had increased from 63 kg to 63½ kg since Tokyo. Reigning champion Andy Cruz of Cuba, who had also won multiple gold medals at other tournaments, had turned professional after winning the 2021 World Championships and did not defend his title.

This division produced something of a surprise when it was won by the unseeded Cuban Erislandy Álvarez. Álvarez reached the final easily, winning his round one contest when the referee stopped the contest in the second round against John Ume of Papua-New Guinea, followed by three unanimous decision victories. In the final, he came up against home nation boxer France’s Sofiane Oumiha, a silver medalist from the 2016 Games. Oumiha won his first two bouts by unanimous decisions to reach the semi-finals. There, he met top seed Wyatt Sanford (CAN), reigning Pan-American Games champion, and won a close contest by a 4–1 majority decision, no judge having more than one point between the boxers.

The final was equally tense, Álvarez winning by a 3-2 decision over Oumiha, one judge having Álvarez as the clear winner by three points, the remaining four judges having no more than one point between the boxers. Seventh seeded Georgian Lasha Guruli, silver medalist from the previous two European championships, was the other losing semi-finalist, beaten comfortably by Álvarez on a unanimous decision.
