Tunisia’s defending gold medalist was Ahmed Hafnaoui but he did not compete at Paris 2024 because of an undisclosed injury. Australian Elijah Winnington was a mild favorite, having won the 2022 World Championship and 2022 Commonwealth Games. Germany’s Lukas Märtens led the 2024 year list coming into Paris and was considered a medal contender, along with Korea’s Kim U-Min, the 2024 World Champion in the event.

Märtens had the fastest time in the heats, with 3:44.13, followed by Brazil’s Guilherme Costa, at 3:44.23. Winnington and Kim both made the final, although Kim barely did so, finishing seventh in round one.

For 300 metres, the final was all Märtens, who led at every turn, and was ahead of world record pace for the first 200. Behind him, Kim was second for most of the race, followed by Australian Samuel Short in the last half of the race. Märtens struggled on the final two laps but hung on for the gold medal by 0.43 seconds over the fast-finishing Winnington, as Kim took the bronze medal, just ahead of Short.
