Oh Ye-Jin of the Republic of Korea took the gold with a score of 243.2 points, and finished with a flourish to hold off teammate and Olympic Village roommate Kim Ye-Ji with 241.3. The World Cup winner and the silver medalist both broke the Olympic record to finish 1-2 in the event.
Oh’s gold medal was the first in shooting at the 2024 Olympics to be won by a country other than China and, for good measure, the silver was taken by her older teammate Kim Ye-Ji as well. “She is like my youngest sibling, and I always want to care for her and always be there for her,” Kim said. “So when she won the gold medal, I was extra happy. I do not view her as my rival. This is a big stage, the Olympics, and we won the gold and silver. When we won these medals, we were so proud we are Koreans.” Oh was later awarded the ISSF Female Shooter of the Year award for 2024.
China’s chances rested on five-time World Champion Jiang Ranxin, who had been an Olympic champion in the team event in Tokyo. In fact, she didn’t even finish as the top Chinese shooter, as she lost out to Li Xue for fifth place.
The bronze medal winner was Manu Bhaker, an Indian former teenage prodigy whose disappointing performance at Tokyo had seen her contemplate giving up the sport and instead focus on her studies.
