Format	Single-elimination tournament.

Twenty-five pairs competed, with seven teams seeded directly into the second round. The favorites were Ricky and Rexy – Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia. They were 1995 World Champions and won the All-England title in 1995-96. The second-seeded team was Malaysia’s Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock and the two favorites made it to the final. Ricky and Rexy had beaten Cheah and Yap numerous times and lost to them only once. But the final saw the Malaysians storm ahead 11-1 in the first game, winning it 15-5. Ricky and Rexy overcame that, however, winning two close games, 15-13 and 15-12, to win the gold medal.
