The defending gold medalists were Ge Fei and Gu Jun (CHN), and they were overwhelming favorites to win again. They had won the World Championships in 1997 and 1999, the 1998 Asian Games, and the All-England title in 1996-98. They won the gold medal again easily, winning all 8 sets in four matches, defeating Chinese teams in the semi-final and final, winning the final in only 35 minutes. The Chinese swept the medals, the first medal sweep in badminton.
