The silver medalist from 1988, Tatyana Ledovskaya, had won the 1990 European title and the 1991 World Championships. But the best runner in 1992 had been the Jamaican-born American, Sandra Farmer-Patrick. Also well considered was the 1990 Commonwealth Champion, Britain’s Sally Gunnell, who had defeated the 1988 gold medalist, Debbie Flintoff-King, to win her Commonwealth gold. Flintoff-King was injured and did not compete in Barcelona. All the favorites made it through to the final, with the semis won by Gunnell and Farmer-Patrick. Farmer-Patrick took the lead in the final at the third hurdle and led until the ninth hurdle. But shaky technique on the last two hurdles allowed Gunnell to run thru and pull ahead to the gold medal.
