With no East Germany and no Soviet Union, the United States was the favorite over the remnant of the USSR – the Unified Team, but also highly considered were the 1991 World Champions, Jamaica. In the final, Juliet Cuthbert, running the second leg for Jamaica, pulled a hamstring and they were out of the race. EUN anchor runner Irina Privalova took the baton one metre ahead of American Gwen Torrence but Torrence pulled ahead to give the US a very close victory.
