The heavy favorite was Russia’s Alina Kabayeva who had not lost a major competition since 1998, and was the 1999 World Champion. She led the qualifying and in the final had the highest score with three of the four implements. But in the hoop routine, she lost control of the hoop, which rolled off the mat. She had to leave the competition area to retrieve it, which was an automatic 0.2 point deduction. She ended up with the second-lowest score with the hoop, and that cost her the gold medal. The surprise gold medalist was her teammate Yuliya Barsukova, who had placed third at the 1999 World Championships.
