Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Polish gymnast Andrzej Szajna won multiple medals at the national, European, and World championships. Szajna represented Zawisza Bydgoszcz for his entire career and won more than 30 national titles. At the 1975 European Championships in Berne he won gold in the floor exercise, along with silver in the vault and bronze in the horizontal bar. His medal haul at the European Championships also included two more silvers in the vault (1971, 1973), and a bronze in the rings (1971). At the 1974 World Championships in Varna, Bulgaria, he won bronze in both the rings and horizontal bar.
Szajna was a three-time Olympian, competing at the Games in München (1972), Montréal (1976), and Moskva (1980). At the München Olympics he just missed out on a medal in the team all-round competition when Poland finished fourth. He had his best individual performances in Montréal, finishing sixth in the all-round competition and the parallel bars. By the Moskva Olympics his form had dropped off, with him finishing 17th overall in the individual all-round. Szajna retired from the sport when he was 35 and went on to teach classes in gymnastics.
