Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas was possibly the heaviest favorite in any women’s athletics event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She had won a silver medal at Rio 2016 and had won the last two World Championships. Unbeaten since 2019 she had been close to the world record earlier in the year, recording 15.43 metres, short of the 1995 world mark of 15.50 by Inessa Kravets (UKR) which had stood for 25 years.
Rojas led the qualifying, as expected, and then eliminated all suspense in round one of the final with a jump of 15.41, a mark that was 40 centimetres beyond what any competitor would record. That was her best effort until the final round when she blasted out 15.67 metres to break Kravets’ world record. The coronation was complete.
Behind Rojas, Portugal’s Patricia Mamona jumped 15.01 in round four to claim silver and Rojas’s training partner, Ana Peleteiro (ESP) took the bronze medal with her fifth-round mark of 14.87. Dominican athlete Thea LaFond who was third in the qualifying round with a new national record of 14.60, finished 12th and last in the final, but she would return at Paris 2024 to win gold.
Rojas would win the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and was a heavy favorite to defend her gold medal at Paris 2024 until, in April 2024, she tore her Achilles’ tendon and could not compete at Paris.
