Earlier in February 1988, the World Championships had been held in St. Louis (USA). Dutchmen Peter van der Velde and Richard Suyten had finished first and second, but Suyten had beaten his compatriot in the 3,000 m race, with a third Dutchman, Jaco Mos coming fourth. Third had been the world record holder, Japan’s Tatsuyoshi Ishihara. Of these, all but Suyten qualified for the final, but none would medal. Instead, the final was won by South Korea’s Lee Jun-Ho. Four years later, with short track a full medal sport, Lee would win a bronze medal in the 1,000 m and a gold medal in the team relay.
